Make Your Holidays Merry, Bright, and Safe!
As you prepare your home for holiday festivities, take a moment to ensure your decorations and traditions are as safe as they are joyful. Below are essential tips to help protect your home and loved ones this season:
Choose fire-resistant decorations.
Select décor made of fire-resistant materials. Many artificial trees, garlands, and tree skirts are, but always check the packaging to confirm.
If you prefer a live tree, water it daily.
Keeping the needles moist reduces the risk of fire. You may also use plant-food products designed to extend the life of your tree.
Inspect electrical decorations.
Before using lights or electronic décor, make sure they are in good condition. Replace any items with frayed wires or loose connections. When purchasing new lights, choose products approved by a recognized testing agency such as UL.
Turn on holiday lights only when an adult is home and awake.
Use extension cords safely.
Keep them out of walkways and ensure they are not placed under furniture.
Practice safe candle use.
Burn candles only when an adult is present. Keep them away from flammable items, use proper holders, and extinguish them before leaving the room. Store matches and lighters out of children’s reach.
Dispose of wrapping materials properly.
Place used wrapping paper and ribbons in a metal trash can. Excess paper can accelerate the spread of a fire.
Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
If your home is not equipped with detectors, now is the time to install them. If you already have them, check and replace batteries if needed.
Keep a working fire extinguisher on hand.
Choose one capable of handling all fire types, including electrical and grease fires, and ensure all family members know how to use it.
Review your family’s fire escape plan.
Identify primary and alternate escape routes in case your main exit is blocked.
Increased home safety is a holiday gift everyone can appreciate.
Wishing you a safe and joyful season!
